Podcast update and more
2023 is moving along quickly - apologies for not being consistent with the newsletter.
First, I’ve been making decisions slowly about the podcast I mentioned early in the year. I actually decided to take the Meyer-Briggs personality test to see if it said something about how hard it is for me to make decisions that loom large for me! And lo and behold, it turns out that as an INFP (though not overwhelmingly introverted - I do love social gatherings!), it’s extremely hard to make decisions because I feel like everything I do needs to be a perfectly authentic reflection of myself.
Anyway, I guess this knowledge is helping me make a little peace with myself about why it’s so damn hard for me to pull the trigger on things.
But I finally have taken some steps to actualize this podcast, which is going to be about Cuban music and its influence in the world. This should’ve been a no-brainer, right? I have a PhD in the topic, after all. But because I’m so broad-minded and interested in so many things, it wasn’t actually my first idea for the podcast. It was always going to be a music-related podcast, but I originally got excited about a different genre/area of music. I do of course realize this is a niche topic to podcast about, which could limit my audience, but I’ve been advised that this could be a good thing.
Here’s where you come in: I’d love for a few people who enjoy podcasts to listen to a sample episode and give me some feedback. Email me back if you’re willing—and if there somehow happens to be a lot of interest I’ll probably just pick a few people. Too many cooks in the kitchen isn’t a great idea for an over-analyzer like myself LOL.
Second, I have a piece to share with you that I published last week following Brendan Fraser’s win for Best Actor at the Academy Awards. My take will likely not surprise you at all, but I hope you’ll check it out and give it a read.
Finally, here’s a quick plug for a show I’ve been watching that I don’t think is getting enough attention: Shrinking on Apple TV+. If you like Ted Lasso, you’ll love this show since it’s co-created by Brett Goldstein, who of course plays Roy Kent. The writing is fantastic - it’s unbelievably funny.
Two words: Harrison Ford!! I strongly believe he could get an Emmy for this role - you’re not gonna believe how incredible a comedic actor he is. We always saw shades of it with Indiana Jones, Han Solo, and Working Girl, but this is a whole other level.
And Jessica Williams, who I’ve been a fan of for a long time but who hasn’t really broken out yet, is a revelation. SO FUNNY. The rest of the cast is amazing as well.
Watch this show - it will make you feel good.
